A homicide investigation was launched, and the woman's other son, Nathan Connors, also known as Nathan White, 28 was arrested after being pulled over while driving his mother's vehicle in peak hour traffic in Sydney.

A man has been charged over the alleged murder of his mother after her body was found with severe head injuries early on Monday morning.

Miranda Police Superintendent Michael O'Toole couldn't confirm when Ms Connors was killed, but they were not ruling out that she was actually murdered on Mother's Day.

It was also "impossible to say" at this stage when the woman died, he added.

Childhood friend Daniel Ikin-McKinnon said Mr White, who went to Sylvania High School, had a serious motorbike crash a few years ago that required him to have a full facial reconstruction.

Linda Connors, 55, was discovered in the family's home on Florida Street by her eldest son at about 6.45am. He said Mr White "kept to himself" since the accident.

'He had always been a pretty good kid growing up.

One woman, who knew Mr White since he was a child, said he had started hearing voices in his head over the past year.

Neighbour Kerrin Willis used to live in the same townhouse complex as the family.

"It was Mother's Day, it's very sad that this has happened", she said.

The woman's other son, 28, was stopped by police on the Princes Highway at St Peters and arrested.

A NSW Police spokesman said police were called to the property to reports of a concern for welfare.

The man has been taken to Newtown police station, where he is being questioned over the woman's death.

Not long after her eldest son, Simon, made the horrific discovery, police pulled over the 55-year-old woman's vehicle in St Peters in Sydney's inner-west on Monday morning.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
