The family of a lobbyist shot multiple times during a Republican baseball practice outside Washington says he has undergone additional surgery and doctors expect a full recovery.
Yesterday morning's baseball practice was in preparation for the Congressional Baseball Game this evening at Nationals Park in Washington - which took place as scheduled. Scalise was reported to have been tended to by Rep. Brad Wenstrup of OH, a US Army Reserve doctor who served in Iraq, before his treatment at the hospital.
President Donald Trump did not attend but sent a video message of support.
The shooter was identified as James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old home inspector from IL. Over social media he had lashed out at Trump and the GOP.
"Not here, but in our thoughts and prayers, Steve Scalise", said the announcer before the game.
"As far as winning and losing, I think that's far from anybody's mind right now", he said.
He was fielding at second base while practising for the event when he was shot in the hip and sustained serious injuries as the bullet travelled through his pelvis and injured internal organs.
Senior US Republican congressman Steve Scalise is showing sign of improvement and is speaking with loved ones after being shot at a baseball game near Washington, DC last week. Sava says Scalise has responded to family members while he's still under sedation.
Despite the united motivation behind the game, especially this year, partisanship was hardly abandoned as Democrats and Republicans faced off, each side seriously itching for a win.
U.S. Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner was shot in the ankle and remains hospitalized in good condition, according to The Washington Post.
"The security detail saved a lot of lives", he said.
But Scalise won't be the only victim of Wednesday's shooting honored at National Park Thursday night.
Lawmakers noted their good fortune in having armed protectors on hand - "Thank God", they exclaimed over and over - and said otherwise the shooter would have been able to take a huge deadly toll.
"Speaker (Paul) Ryan did himself credit when he said 'an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us, '" Larson said.
Every year, with a few interruptions, Senate and House members of each party solidify friendships off the floor and on the field.
Scalise, the number three Republican in the House of Representatives, arrived at the hospital in a critical state, facing "an imminent risk of death", according to Sava.
The Democrats defeated the Republicans 11-2.
Trump added, "We pray for all of the victims of this bad crime who are still recovering, including Zachary Barth and Matt Mika, both of whom are respected and cherished by so many".
Democrat and Republican teams have put aside politics for one night since 1909 to meet on the baseball diamond and raise money for charity.
