The stadium projected a rare sense of unity in Washington, as members of both parties rallied together after the shocking shooting that left House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana) in critical condition.

The hospital where Rep. Steve Scalise is recuperating from a gunshot wound says he "remains in critical condition, but has improved in the last 24 hours".

Scalise was wounded when a gunman opened fire at a GOP lawmaker baseball practice Wednesday morning.

Wounded U.S. Capitol Police officer David Bailey set aside one of his crutches and threw out the game's first pitch.

Many lawmakers wore purple and gold hats and shirts emblazoned with the LSU logo in a show of support for Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who was shot one day earlier during the Republican team's practice for the annual event. The hospital said he would require additional operations and said he remained in critical condition as of Wednesday evening.

In a statement posted to his Twitter account, Mr Scalise was said to be "more responsive, and is speaking with his loved ones". In a statement released Thursday morning, his family said Mika was shot in the chest and arm and suffered massive trauma, the Detroit News reports. Scalise is a member of the team and had been fielding balls at second base in preparation for the game when he was shot.

"The security detail saved a lot of lives", he said. And leading figures throughout the American political spectrum, from President Donald Trump on down to local leaders, have taken note of the shooting as a cautionary tale for the nation not to let legitimate differences of opinion escalate to violence and bloodshed.

The bullet entered Scalise's left hip and tore across his pelvis, cracking bones and injuring organs and blood vessels.

Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican, arrived at the hospital via helicopter in shock, with intense internal bleeding and "an imminent risk of death", Sava said.

The 51-year-old Republican congressman from Louisiana underwent another surgery on Saturday, the hospital treating him said, which was at least his third operation since being transported to the facility.

The Louisiana Republican was shot in the hip Wednesday morning in the baseball practice shooting by an IL man with grudges against President Donald Trump and the GOP.

Law enforcement officials proceeded Friday with their investigation of the attack at a suburban Virginia park, including examining Hodgkinson's social media activities and his home in Belleville, Illinois. Authorities are investigating the incident but have not identified a motive. The offices of both senators - Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth - turned over the emails to Capitol Police and declined to offer specifics about their content. With the chief deputy of the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department by her side, she said she felt "horrible" about the actions of her husband of almost 30 years. Richmond, who plays for the Democratic team, said he had visited the hospital multiple times.
