He said doctors have turned down Mr Scalise's sedation levels enough that he has been able to respond to visiting family members. The congressman has received "many units" of blood and surgeries from multiple specialized units. Infection also is a risk, especially if the intestines were perforated.

At Friday's hospital news conference, Scalise's chief of staff Brett Horton read a statement from Jennifer Scalise, the congressman's wife.
Authorities also confirm Hodgkinson legally purchased a 9 mm handgun and an assault-style rifle from licensed firearms sellers.
Hodgkinson, who was killed by police during the rampage, contacted both of his state's Democratic senators frequently, spokesmen said Friday.
MedStar reported late Thursday evening that he had undergone another operation to treat internal injuries and a broken bone in his leg.
Lobbyist Matt Mika, who was shot several times and critically wounded, has undergone additional surgery and doctors expect a full recovery, his family said.
